What Are Pontoon Boats?

Pontoon boats are among the most popular, versatile, and least expensive boats of their size. Those in the trailerable size range commonly feature cylindrical hull sections and are made from aluminum. Pontoon boats are most often powered by outboards. Pontoon boats are generally not targets for lightning and our summer storms pass very quickly.

Pontoon boats are built from a variety of materials, usually closed cylinders. Closed cylinders include pipes, barrels, concrete boxes, and more. Pontoon boats are known for being very safe and stable. However, pontoon boats do not fare well in large bodies of water and are good for vacationing on a lake or where the water is calm. Pontoon boats are also used as small vehicle ferries to cross rivers and lakes in many parts of the world, especially in Africa. Pontoon ferries may be motorised, such as the Kazungula Ferry that crosses the Zambezi River, powered by another boat, or pulled by cables.

Pontoon boats are available for rentals on lakes and rivers in many parts of the United States. I had my first experience with one a few years back out on a lake in central Oregon. Pontoon boats are quickly becoming popular due to their versatility. They can be outfitted for fishing or have barbecue grills (yes, you can fish from a boat with a grill -- then you've got a grill for cooking your catch!) Rates for powerboats include fuel. Boat reservations are strongly recommended.
